Airport marketing is city's next investment

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo knows a good marketing opportunity when he sees it.

While the city's new airport terminal isn’t expected to be operational until 2011, Mayor Jamie Mayo said the city intends to beginning marketing the construction to increases enplanements and as an economic development initiative.

“We’ll incorporate the new terminal construction as well as the completion of it in our marketing campaign,” Mayo said.

After several years of project development, the city has been able to secure a lion’s share of the $35 million needed to build the terminal from a mix of local, state and federal funding.

At a time when many local governments across the country are struggling to remain solvent, Mayo said the construction shows how progressive Monroe has become. To Mayo, that translates to marketing.
