British Airways picked up two awards at the 2009 Globe Travel Awards, winning recognition for its innovation and also being named the best scheduled airline to Europe.

Presented by Travel Weekly magazine in partnership with Associated Newspapers, the Globe Travel Awards were handed out at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on January 27th.

British Airways was one of many airlines to be recognised at the event, with Emirates named the leading carrier to the Middle East and Asia, Africa and Australasia regions.

Virgin Atlantic picked up the award for the best airline flying to the USA and Canada, while Gatwick Airport was named the best regional UK hub.

Walt Disney World Resort in Florida won the accolade for the best theme park and the prize for the best tourist board went to Australia.

More than 50,000 votes were received in the run-up to the 2009 Globe Travel Awards, many of which were cast in the consumer section, which saw Virgin Atlantic named the favourite airline and Hilton the top hotel chain.
