Costa Rica’s Tourism Sees Gains during Downturn

16/06/2009 10:32

In spite of the global economic downturn Costa Rica’s tourism industry is forging ahead with an increase in interest from the airline industry, a variety of recognitions for its sustainable tourism message, and a record number of attendants at Expotur, the Costa Rica Travel Mart and Central America’s prominent travel trade show.

Despite tourism’s steep global decline, the event hosted 186 service providers, a 29 percent increase over 2008. Participation during this year’s event was also at an all-time high.

Expotur welcomed over 5,000 visitors during its five-day span, including buyers and delegates from more than 25 countries, including Belgium, Panama, France, England, Sweden, Italy, Germany and the United States, as well as consumers looking for great vacation deals in the region.

Much of Costa Rica’s success is attributed to the increase in environmental consciousness over the last five years. In 1978, Costa Rica made an unprecedented move to preserve its biodiversity in an effort to protect what they believed to be their most important asset.

Today, with the support of various internationally recognized programs, Costa Rica has become the poster child for the amazing results that can be attained by adopting sustainable practices for businesses and communities as well.
