George Enescu Festival - World's top Orchestras

Romania (World Tourism News) - The 19th annual George Enescu International Festival and Competition, scheduled for August 30 - September 26, 2009, will pay special tribute to Romania's most famous composer and musician on the 128th anniversary of his birth, in 1881.

George Enescu was one of the most prodigiously gifted musicians of the twentieth century," according to noted biographer Paul Banks. "A great violinist and composer, a distinguished conductor, an accomplished pianist, able cellist and a famous violin teacher who numbered Christian Ferras, Arthur Grumiaux and Yehudi Menuhin among his pupils. His musical memory was phenomenal, a fact that contributed to the loss of some of his own works which he composed but never wrote down".

 

Some of the world's most famous orchestras, chamber ensembles will perform in Bucharest and other Romanian cities, some premiering new works.

  • Saint Martin in the Fields
  • Les Musiciens du Louvre
  • Theatre du Ballet de Monte Carlo
  • Orchestra Del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
  • Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
  • Munchener Philharmoniker Kammerorchester.

 

 

George Enescu Festival 2007

 

 

 

Well known operas Oedipus, Othello, Manon Lescaut, Macbeth, or Swan’s Lake ballet are included in the program. The opening gala concert will be held at the Bucharest National Opera House and will stage OEDIPUS – a joint production of the National Opera from Bucharest and the Théâtre du Capitole du Toulouse.
