Lufthansa launches Italian airline

27/11/2008 21:29

German flag carrier Lufthansa is setting up its own Italian airline based in Milan Malpensa to serve major European cities including London.

Lufhansa Italia will operate four times daily between Heathrow and Milan from the end of March.

The airline will have an Italian Air Operator Certificate and a Lufthansa spokesman said it would blend the German carrier’s reputation for reliability and quality with “Italian flair”.

Lufthansa is battling with Air France/KLM to strike an alliance with bankrupt Alitalia and its move was seen as signalling its determination to get a foothold in the Italian market even if it lost that fight.
