St. Maarten Hotels Seek Millions for Marketing Campaign

20/02/2009 08:21

Hotels in St. Maarten are pleading for government help amid a significant drop in tourism to the Dutch Caribbean territory.

The territory’s hotel association has asked the local government for help in creating a $4.1 million fund for an emergency marketing campaign. Hotel operators estimate that more than 2,000 jobs are now at risk because of the ‘‘rapidly deteriorating’’ tourism market.

The 150-member association said in a statement that it could put $600,000 toward the fund. Tourism is down across the Caribbean because of the global economic crisis.
